SSC CHSL Exam Pattern 2019 – Tier l, ll, lll Exam Pattern


The Staff selection Commission conducts the SSC CHSL exam for recruitment of Combined Higher Secondary level exam. This exam is conducted for the recruitment of staff for departments and ministries of the Government of India. This year, the exam will be conducted from 1st July 2019 to 26th July 2019.  The exam is divided into 3 tiers of papers to be conducted on different dates. The candidates aspiring for this exam should be aware of the changes made in the pattern of the exam, The  changes are as follows:

The change made this year is that the Tier l paper will include questions from all sections in no particular sequence.

Pattern of SSC CHSL 2019

As mentioned earlier, the exam is divided into 3 Tiers of papers to be conducted on different dates with different syllabus and pattern. The pattern of the papers are as follows:

Tier l

The tier l paper will be a computer based Written exam for a duration of 60 minutes instead of 75 minutes. The duration is 80 minutes for VH/OH afflicted by Cerebral Palsy OH with deformity in writing hand. The paper is divided into 4 sections with 25 questions each, namely General Intelligence, English, Quantitative aptitude and General awareness, each section is of 50 marks each.  

The paper consists of Multiple Choice questions only and there will be negative marking of 0.50 marks for each incorrect answer. The paper can be attempted both in English or Hindi for section l, lll and llll.

Tier ll

This test is a Descriptive type paper to be conducted in pen and paper mode. The test will be of 100 marks with a duration of 1 hour. It will consist of Essay Writing with a word limit of 200-250 words and letter writing with a word limit of 150-200 words. The paper can be attempted in English or Hindi and the minimum qualifying marks would be 33 percent.

Tier lll

This will be a skill test/Typing test and will be of qualifying nature. The final selection of candidates will be determined from the results of both Tier l and Tier ll.
Candidates will be called for the skill test only if they secure at least minimum prescribed marks in Tier l and Tier ll papers.

VH/OH(afflicted by Cerebral Palsy) and OH with deformity in writing hand(with 40% disability and above) will be allowed 35 minutes with a compensatory time of 20 minutes. The Data entry speed test would be of qualifying nature, candidates have to comply to the prescribed speed on computer which will be provided by the Commission or the agency authorised by the Commission.

The paper will be conducted at the Commission’s regional offices or other centres decided by the Commission.

Candidates will be eligible for being recommended for appointment according to the merit list, only if they qualify the skill test with a speed not less than 8000 key depressions per hour.

For the post of Data Entry Operator, none of the candidates (including PH candidates) who qualify in written part of the examination will be exempted from the skill test as passing the skill test is a precondition and an important qualification for this post.
Candidates belonging to Scheduled Caste, Scheduled tribe, OBC, ExS and PH may be called for the test by the commission with relaxed standards if the commission thinks that sufficient number of students of these categories are not likely to be available for the test on the basis of qualifying criteria for general category candidates in order to fill up vacant seats reserved for SC, ST, OBC, PH, ExS)
